Gaps Project

I thought this project was pretty cool looking at all the different layouts. It was crazy how literally every page was a different layout, I feel like they'd take so long to design every single page. Some of the pages would be similar, and you could tell they were from the same magazine (for example, the parents magazine, almost all of the pages has some line or small decal on the edging of the text.) Just like the book project, the pages that were ALL text were really un-appealing and just FULL of text. The words are all together, and it seems like a lot to read. Almost all the margins were the same on my pages, about a 3/4 inch. The pages that are most compelling to me were the ones with pictures, and different "sections" of text. I really am drawn to the short texts since I don't like reading. ;) The size of the headers I like the most are the ones that are only about 5pt's bigger than the text. I am pretty drawn away from the big bold headers, not a huge fan of those. Overall, I enjoyed looking at the different layouts.

My Book Showing

I really like in this book, how the margins on the side of the pages have plenty of white/black space. I think it creates a better focal point on the main text. The bottom of the page shows the chapter title and the page number, which I like. It's nothing special but I enjoy it's placement. I think on the bottom of the page is always preferred (by me) over the top of the page. I also really like on the right page that there is a space for a specific section. The layout of this page is pretty simple, but I think I tend to gravitate more towards the simpler looks of books anyway. I like the typeface, once again, simple but clean and easy to read.

week 3 post

Hello hello!

So the prototype is going quite well. Like I wrote in my last blog post, I had some issues with my initial idea, but it's going well now. I decided to use eucalyptus and dried flowers instead of my first idea of leaves. Same font - and am now planning on taking the pictures either at the farmers market (since that's where I got the plants) or in a flower garden. 

I had used a big piece of form board, but then made the K and decided I wanted it to be cut out, so I have it cut out (see picture) and now just need to add more floral to bulk it up and finish.

wk two update two

So.. my crisp and clean idea didn't workout as well as planned. The leaves (any types) didn't want to stick/form to my cardboard letter. So! I took my project a different direction. Still used a K with the same font, but used flowers and eucalyptus from our room to make it. I like the way it turned out a lot better, using white stock cardboard instead of thin brown stuff. I am planning to cut the K out, and not have extra white space on it. Here is a picture of my progress.

I got all the flowers from the farmers market, so I'm thinking it'd be super cool to do a picture there, however, I might not be able to get to in time, in which case I will just do it in a garden here on campus.

Crisp & Clean

I've decided to go with a theme of leaves. In the fall, one of the biggest things I think of are crisp leaves, and I love them! Although it might not be fall yet, the leaves are starting to turn and fall a little bit.

I'm using the font Kannada Sangam MN because I like the crisp look of the "K"

I've also chosen to do K instead of C (for crisp) or L (for leaves) because I always like to turn everything that starts with a C into a K for "Kiley" ;)

I'm planning on covering the letter in leaves (either hackberry or red mulberry I believe. Although I am not an expert on leaves.) I will be tracing my K onto cardboard with my font, and it will be about 8-10 inches tall. I'll cover it in leaves I collect using modpodge! 

When it's done, I plan on taking it's picture in a tree, either hanging from the tree, up in the tree or even hanging below in a hammock.)
